Journey of a million miles

Aloha to my beautiful runners, athletes and friends,
It has been nearly a year since I have had a serious surgery on my left hip performed by Dr. Kam at Castle Hospital in Kailua, HI.
Since then, Kailua has become my home in ways impossible to put into words. I have found inspiration, true friendships, amazing connections, new trails to run and climb, as well as new pathways to my latest calling of pre-med degree at Hawaii Pacific University.
These beautiful experiences allowed me to realize and understand the value of my body, my spirit, my soul and those unique spirits around me that flourish each moment and breathe in light and joy into my heart.
I have also been blessed with finding practice of yoga and meditation which also allowed me to see inside of my true self and discover weaknesses and strengths, discover the beauty within and become even more aware of my body and my voice.
Continuing to coach, but unable to run ( at most jog lightly) I have been amazed my some athletic performances of some runners and triathletes locally and will continue to come up with challenging and fun workouts for our Monday night Track at Kailua High School at 5:30pm.
My contemplations and journeys have brought me, as of late, to an island of Kauai’i where I started my journey down NaPali coast with a question which I have been carrying for months now. My surgery did not leave me pain free, and the Dynamic Hip screw which was inserted into my femur and femoral neck pinched and rubbed against many muscles, IT band, bursa, quads and ligaments for 10 months now.
Realizing, this will not get better and that the risk for AVN will be present for at least another year, I have come to terms with my strength, my hope and my fears. As I carried a 50 pound pack on my shoulders for 2 days, up and down cliffs of indescribable beauty, I have come to terms that it is worth a risk to remove the plate and the screws and allow the bone and muscles to heal naturally. Upon my return, I have discussed this with my doctor who, in turn, has consulted several colleagues of his and warned me about the rarity of this type of procedure and the risk which will go with it.
Our best solution was to insert a cadaver bone to allow my bone to have more stability so it can then generate its own cells and fill in the gaps by replacing the cadaveric bone. SEEMS COMPLICATED? I think I will have a hands on experience even before I get to clinicals in nursing school!
Bottom line, I am hopeful and fearless. My desire to be well and to be active and healthy gives me courage to pursue this operation and to discover other activities and sports while I am healing. I am hopeful I will be able to run and race once again. Ok, ok! Maybe not 100 mile races but there are a lot of marathons I am yet to participate in!
The training on Mondays will continue and I will also continue taking runners for one on one training for marathons, halfs and other events.
I am truly inspired by amazing people I meet daily. Their energy gives me light, softens my heart and lifts my spirit.
Mahalo for being part of my life.
Happy trails and Aloha.
Speedy recovery and stronger than ever!

Track Mondays: Training resumes
Posted in Uncategorized on August 2, 2010 by ultratoneytrainerAloha!
As I slowly recover from my femur surgery, the coaching on Monday nights resumes. We are rotating Kailua High school track and Castle HS track and the workout begins at 6pm. For all who are interested in joining as amazing and funny group of guys and a girl, contact me or refer to the Track mondays link on this site. All levels are welcome. Warm up for 10-15 minutes prior to the workout. We cool down and warm up together and do few stretching exercises after ( some of us really enjoy these!).
Mahalo for reading.
Dig deep
Dream on
Run free
